New York, August 10 (EFE) .- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday appointed Argentine Rear Admiral Guillermo Pablo Rios as the head of the Military Monitoring Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).
Rios will replace General Jose Eladio Alcain of Uruguay as head of mission and chief military observer, whose mandate will soon expire, the organization said in a statement.
The UN highlighted the rear admiral’s career in the Argentine Navy, where he began serving in 1988 and held various positions, most recently Director General of Education, Training and Doctrine of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
RĂos has participated in UN peacekeeping operations, including one in Cyprus (1993-1994) and another with the United Nations’ Druze Monitoring Organization (2007), the memo points out.
He has also been a Humanitarian Supervisor for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Angola (1997-1998).
UNMOGIP was established in 1949 to oversee a ceasefire agreed to by India and Pakistan in the Kashmir region after the war that followed the partition of the subcontinent. EFE
