LIV Golf LIVE: Leaderboard and Day 3 results as Branden Grace beats Dustin Johnson to win in Portland

Carlos Ortiz leads Dustin Johnson with a single shot after the first round at Live Portland

Branden Grace produced a stunning final round to win the LIV Golf Portland event and claim the first prize of £3.2 million. The South African had started two shots from behind for Carlos Ortiz but round 65 made him jump to win three shots over the Mexican. Former world number one Dustin Johnson was in contention despite his slow start but couldn’t keep up with Grace in ninth defense, while Patrick Reed’s attack came too late to threaten the leaderboard.

Grace won twice on the PGA Tour and nine times on the European Tour before splitting to LIV Golf ahead of the inaugural event at the Centurion Club last month. He’s part of the Stinger GC that won outside of London just as Charles Schwarzl declared the win. Despite Grace’s performance, it was the cast of 4 Aces that includes Johnson, Reed, Pat Perez, and Taylor Gotsch this time around.

As events unfold, LIV Golf has also announced its latest new signature in the Ryder Cup regular Paul Casey. “LIV Golf continues to attract the best players in the sport as it builds increasing competitive areas with each event,” said Greg Norman, CEO of LIV Golf. Paul Casey adds to the growing list of the 50 best golfers who are excited to be part of an innovative and fun format that is creating something new for golf. His track record on the world stage adds another exciting piece to the competition as we prepare for Bedminster.”

There is still some drama that will come out in the final green in team format. Ortiz may be unable to catch Grace, but a birdie in the latter ensures his Fireballs GC will outpace Torque GC to third.

Grace isn’t shy about picking up his driver at the age of 18, but he drove the ball so well that it’s no surprise. The safe approach finds the heart of the Green Zone and victory for South Africa is now a formality.

Grace misses the pass at 5 par-17 and his position in the raw left is pulled off the green. It’s a tough playing field from there but still has an outside opportunity to get up and down for Byrdie. Johnson launched a fierce campaign down the middle but his approach found the front bunker from 211 yards.

Branden Grace was the only one in the last group to miss the green at 16 but the South African chips in Altaïr! Ortiz, who was eyeing a two-shot swing, is suddenly left with a necessary bird strike and drags her down the hole. Grace leads by two with two slots to play.

It’s two shots now! Grace rolls into a flying position at 15 after a superb approach to move to -11. He is five below par on his tour. Ortiz had a good shot at Birdie himself, but the Mexican racket caught a cold and stayed at -10.
