(CNN) – India reported 853 new deaths due to COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the total death toll in the country to 400,312 since the outbreak, according to the Indian Ministry of Health.
India is the third country after Brazil and the United States to record more than 400,000 deaths. Experts say the number of cases and deaths in the Asian nation is higher than reported, especially during the second wave of the epidemic.
However, according to the Indian Ministry of Health, Johns Hopkins University estimates that there are 29.23 deaths per 100,000 people in India, which is significantly lower than many developed countries such as the United States, which has 184.23 deaths per 100,000 population.
In India, 46,617 new cases were reported on Friday, bringing the total to 30,458,251, according to the Ministry of Health.
