Sometimes, it’s not hard to decipher certain moves a team might make on the roster as they move into a new season.
Such was the case on Wednesday when wide receiver Robby Anderson was released by the Cardinals — he recently changed his name to Chosen, According to his Instagram account After a disappointing half-season following a deal from Carolina. Anderson’s cut provides $12 million in salary cap space for the team, an obvious decision for new general manager Monty Ossenfurt.
The move leaves the Cardinals with five wide receivers currently under contract for 2023: DeAndre Hopkins, Hollywood Brown, Rondale Moore, Javon Wims and Auden Tate. Hopkins will likely be traded, though Greg Dortch is expected to return as an exclusive free agent.
Anderson, who was acquired as a 2024 sixth-round draft pick and seventh-round draft pick in 2025, has played in 10 games with the Cardinals. But he only had seven catches for 76 yards and never got along on offense despite opportunities with injuries to Hopkins, Brown and Moore. Anderson was brought in to fill a void with Brown hurting his foot.
With the start of a new league year and free agency starting next week, it’s important to add $12 million to the cap. According to overthecap.com, the Cardinals had about $15.8 million in cap space before Anderson was released, a number that will roughly halve after the 2023 contracts begin and the team signs the 2023 draft class.
