Stereotyping Women in Relationships

My friend gave me a movie last week and said, “it is a Hindi movie, it is good, a must watch”. I had heard of the movie when a friend told his girlfriend that the movie is apt for her and all girls. The movie is called Pyaar Ka Punchnama, a film by Luv Ranjan.
It is a good movie, a one-time watch, basically about how stupid it is for guys to fall for girls, how different a relationship is from what it looks like and how boys or men suffer after they are in a relationship. I enjoyed the movie definitely but when I reflected on it later on, I realized how man-centric and how stereotyped are movies produced in India (or maybe elsewhere too).
Every movie that has been a hit has a male chauvinist and the world revolves around him. Female roles are getting exceedingly ornamental. Or for that matter, I never understood the need to use models for bike or car ads where they are as good as furniture. And even if once in a blue moon they do make a movie on women, it is about how miserable they are. I do not approve of the Twilight saga. Why? Because it is the worst possible equation – a woman narrating a story about her loving a guy (Edward the vamp of course) to the point of worship. And. If it is the other way round, the result is Pyaar Ka Punchnama.
If there is too much love, the woman is clingy, if she is too liberal, she is not interested and is playing around, if she wants a day with her friend, she is too open. Maybe there are women who think that way or there are instances in every relationship that materialize such reactions but that is hardly reason enough to stereotype on the basis of that. And the part about asking “when do girls work, what does she do in office? The whole day she keeps calling or texting me…my work interrupted……..”. Well, that is really not true. I know women who work their lives out in office and manage homes and I know guys who work one month and enjoy three months just showing their faces in office (quarter end work-load). Yes, instead of texting or calling people, they prefer to browse the net.
Whatever habits are shown are in stark white or black which result in stereotyping. What they show may be (or is) true but the reason or rationale behind those actions are rarely explained, leaving the audience to form their own conclusions. Life is actually contained in the shades of grey, nothing is so easily explained. Maybe the makers of the movie had a disastrous relationship and India as a democratic country does guarantee freedom of expression but what is the moral? Ok, it is a good movie and the actors have done their part well, it is well-directed and shot decently. But what is the message behind the plot? That people should stop falling in love or there should be no more relationships? That is not happening, definitely not. And as far as I know, the minds behind the script, if they haven’t achieved enlightenment (and they are still single), they will be in a relationship sooner or later, and they will enjoy most of the days, if not all of them.
Till then, if you got into a bad relationship, do not use it to serve ideas to people who are or might be having a bad time at their relationships, do not stereotype girls, because I think one of the reasons why men are not being stereotyped as explicitly is because of censorship reasons and the obvious male-dominated theatre crowd. Truth is bitter and women are tolerant, so sell what sells in the market.
