Human beings when gone mad are never allowed to roam free instead they are forcefully chained and are mostly taken to dark, dingy lonely cells accompanied by shock treatment. The irony is that un owned stray dogs mostly rabies carriers are let loose on the streets with self appointed elite animal protection activists rallying behind them while the poor and the downtrodden bears the brunt. Turning a blind eye to the heart breaking cry of scores of parents who lost children bitten by stray dogs and the thousands who got bitten by them, the animal lovers shed more clothes, creates more communities in social networking sites and organize meet ups and fund raisers to celebrate the freedom and raise voice for the stray dogs.
According to recent report of the Association of prevention and control of rabies in India (APCRI) report, the dog bites in Bangalore is about 6,ooo per month. Take a stroll along any street in Bangalore and you are sure to find stray dogs freely roaming about and even sleeping in the already crammed foot paths. If one is not careful enough, probability of stepping on those sleeping dogs are high and will end up rewarding oneself with dog bite and a series of injections. Hypocrisy scales heights as media competes to publicize snaps of hotties holding the ‘vaccinated’ puppies which they adopted from streets. What about the unvaccinated dogs roaming around? Will anyone take responsibility for them?
Off late, the elite and the upwardly mobile Indians having started considering animal protection activist tag a status symbol. Maneka Gandhi is one such activist who has raised a lot of hue and cry for animals. But most of these animal lovers have seldom walked through crammed foot paths with danger of stray dogs lurking around. Do they have the confidence that their children will come unhurt if send out to the streets for a evening walk? While this tragic news end up in local news page, the naked snaps of animal protection right activists occupy the front pages of popular magazines and are shared and liked by many in the social networking arena.
While the government finding it difficult to rehabilitate homeless human beings, once can easily guess the foolishness of the rehabilitation of the stray dogs argument. The World organization for Animal health argues for humane methods in controlling the stray dogs like adoption. But will these humane methods help curb the stray dogs? Does this mean, human beings should die of dog bite till these ‘humane methods’ will slowly eradicate stray dogs?
Animals have life, they do have a right to live and it has to be protected. This doesn’t mean that the life of an animal must be considered at par with life of a human being endowed with reason and intellect. Men are not dogs and will not be dogs. Their rights differ. If stray dogs are a threat to human beings they must be eradicated promptly. The elite and the rich must get down to protect the right of poor and the downtrodden to live without the fear of stray dogs than ending up as poster boys/girls of animal protection groups.
