With sportspersons now eligible to receive the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour, the debate over who should receive it and who shouldn’t has risen to the surface again. The contenders for the award include the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Vishwanathan Anand, Abhinav Bindra and the late Dhyan Chand. The achievements of all the names on the list can not be disputed. Each of them in a league of their own, their achievements world-class. Next, Let us take a look at Vishwanathan Anand. Four-time World Champion and one of the only 6 players to break the 2800 FIDE ratings mark, Vishwanathan Anand has laid stake to almost every achievement imaginable in the illustrious mind sport of Chess. He began his shooting career at the age of 15, becoming the youngest participant at the 1998 Olympic games. 10 years later in 2008, Abhinav Bindra shot his way to victory at the Beijing Olympics. Between those years, Bindra won 3 gold medals, 2 at the commonwealth games and one at the world shooting championdships. After suffering a career-threatening back injury after the 2006 commonwealth games, Bindra sprung back putting in a lot of effort to bag the gold at Beijing. After the success, Bindra has kept a low profile. winning 1 gold and 1 silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

In the next world cup in Los Angeles in 1932, Dhyan Chand’s men beat hosts USA 24-1 in the final, a world record at that time. The crowning moment of his illustrious career came during the 1936 olympics in Berlin. India won all group matches and play-offs without conceding a goal with Chand doing most of the scoring. The Indians defeated Germany 8-1 in the finals, Dhyan Chand playing bare-foot. The dictator of Germany, the infamous Hitler was impressed by Dhyan Chand’s magic and offered him German Citizenship and the post of Colonel. The patriot in Dhyan Chand refused. Don Bradman saidm, “He scores goals like runs in cricket.” It is this legacy that we Indians should uphold and it is indeed a matter of pride that the National Sports Day is celebreated on Dhyan Chand’s Birthday.
Judgement:
If there is one person who deserves the Bharat Ratna, it is the late Dhyan Chand. If there are two people who deserve it, it must also go to Vishwanathan Anand. As for Sachin Tendulkar and Abhinav Bindra, Sachin’s achievements though great, doesn’t match up against the likes of Dhyan Chand and Vishwanathan Anand and he should be content with the title of the World’s greatest cricketer. As for Abhinav Bindra, he is still very young and early into his career and has a long way to go. I am sure he will win the Bharat Ratna in the future, though not now.
