Prathiba Patil’s term as President will come to an end next year and that will lead to another presidential election where unless something dramatic happens, the UPA’s candidate will win and become the next President of the Republic of India. In this post, exercising my right to opinion, I point out reasons why Prathiba Patil(Her excellency) is probably the “Worst President India has ever Had” and candidates who can best serve as Presiden. Before looking at reasons for calling her “The worst president”, I will illustrate some reasons why, except in some cases, we always end up having “Bozos” for Presidents. The first reason why we never get a good president is the procedure of election. Unlike the USA where the people themselves elect the president, the MLA’s and MP’s of state and central legislatures respectively are handed the responsibility of electing India’s First Citizen. In simple terms, this means that the political party with the highest number of elected representatives gets to select and elect the presiden. Of course, there are always other candidates but it is always the candidate propped up by the ruling party that wins. The president hence elected becomes a puppet in the hands of the ruling party. In the current case, Sonia Gandhi’s(No, not congress or UPA). Unlike the previous president, Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam who was Charismatic, inspiring and respected by the World, Prathiba Devi Singh Patil is merely a puppet in the hands of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi or should I say, Mrs. Antonia Edvige Albina Maino. There isn’t a single person in the country(as far as I know) who has been inspired by her and feels proud of her. Mrs. Patil’s image in the eyes of the world isn’t very great. I’m afraid they might now even be aware of her existence. Her speeches during the Republic day and the Independence day do not give rise to hope and inspiration even in the most patriotic bones of the country. She speaks like a parrot, only uttering what she has memorised from a script written by some poor soul and does not seem to utter a single word of her own. A person who is unable to put on her footwear and requires her security guards to do it, I am afraid, simply cannot be called India’s president. A person who cannot attend the funeral of India’s war hero and first Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, is called the supreme commander of the armed forces? She, who isn’t able to take her own decisions, be the president of India. It is simply an insult to the post and if we have such presidents, the value of the post itself will diminish.

Let us look at a few names who can serve India better as presidents:

1.Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam- Dr.Kalam, who has already served one term as president is highly respected by all political parties and every citizen of India. A recipient of the ‘Bharat Ratna’, he has contributed a lot to India’s growth as an economy during his tenure and also repairing India’s image in the eyes of the world. He is ideal as he is the personification of the intersection of Science and Humanities. He believes that India can become a developed country by the year 2020. Thought it is highly improbable given India’s current position, this would be he ideal time to give him a chance to prove that “Nothing is Impossible”.

2. Dr.Chakravarthy Rangarajan- Dr.Ranga Rajan, given the current state of the Indian economy with the rupee losing tis value, would be an ideal candidate to strengthen India’s economy. The former governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Dr.Rang Rajan has taught economics at institutions like the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently serving as chairman of the Prime Minister’s economic advisory council and has served as the governor of three states.

3. Naina Lal Kidwai- The first Indian woman to graduate from the Harvard Business School, she is the country head of HSBC bank. She has repeatedly been named in Fortune List of Top women in business, Wall Street Journal list of Woman to watch for and other top business rankings. She is another person who could repair India’s fledgling economy and can solve India’s problems. A perfect combination of young blood and intellectuality, she has what it takes to be India’s second and best “Woman President”.

4. Narayan Murthy- This man needs no introduction at all. The person who created Infosys, a company worth $2 billion out of a paltry $200 is perhaps one who has redefined the IT scene in India. His story is fairy-tale like, yet it is true. He is an advisory member on the boards of the Stanford Business School, The Harvard Business School, a trustee of the Rhodes trust that manages the prestigious Rhodes scholarships. If he can recreate what he did with Infosys with India, there will be no doubt that we will emerge as a developed country. A true visionary, he can negottiate with the US, China and Russia without a sense of inferiority and that is what we need.

Note: In the comments section, please vote for who you think should become India’s next President.
