My utmost faith and belief in the highest office of the President of India, rising above narrow political and regional aspirations gives me hope in spite of the political apathy in midst of this threat looming large on the people of Kerala.
Analysing and understanding the facts about the Mullaperiyar Dam, one of the oldest dam in service in the world sent chills down the spine of both experts and passive readers. Being built about 130 years ago with limestone and having a life span 50 years, the dam has gone past its life span. The administrators and politicians are turning a blind eye to the visible warning signals of water gushing out through the cracks and also the recent tremors in the region.
The magnitude of risk is accentuated by a host of factors. The failure of Mullaperiyar dam could lead to the failure of other four dams including Idukki reservoir and would wreak havoc in the region washing off five districts in Kerala, inhabited by three million people. The absence of up to date warning systems coupled with the impossibility of evacuations from these highly populated districts would result in one of the worst ever disaster India has ever witnessed.
The indifferent attitude of the Tamil Nadu government to raise the height of the dam to 152 feet strikes at the spirit of mutual co-operation and integrity exhibited by the states of Indian union. The lease deed signed between Travancore states and Madras Government in 1886 for 999 years should not come in the way of safety and security of the people in the region. No reason what so ever can be found in Tamil Nadu government’s blind opposition for Kerala’s attempt to build a new dam given the fact that Kerala has never opposed to share water, which is helpful to the agriculture in southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
The pertinent question is, can we place the life of three million people at stake to honour an agreement signed in 1886 valid for 999 years, when the experts states clearly that the Dam has gone past its lifespan?
We earnestly request your immediate action and intervention so that the people of Kerala can live peacefully without any apprehension on the dam safety.
