One of the biggest of life’s big questions is the debate over the existence of God. The concept of a single supreme being, all seeing, all knowing and all powerful, is the basis for many different religions for billions of people around the world. Believers, called theists, insist that at least one God exists, while atheists don’t see any evidence for God. Agnostics say that there is no way for knowing for sure. No matter what we believe where do we start?. First we need to define God. Throughout the history, people have believed in hundreds of gods, each with their own roles and responsibilities. The Greek god Zeus, for example was the father of all other gods and ruler the sky and thunder, while the Viking god Odin was the king of the gods and war. All these gods were absolutely real to their worshipers but today, no one really believes in them. Our question therefore, relates to a mighty living being with the power to create matter and energy and shape the universe.
Holy Books
The books of many faiths tell of only one God. God may have several names, including God, Allah, Jehovah and Heavenly Father, but is ever present and ever perfect. However, the descriptions of God vary by religion. The Christian God, for example, exists in three parts: Father, Son, and the holy Spirit. The Muslim prophet Muhammad is the last in the series of prophets who bought God’s words to Earth. The Jewish God created the universe but doesn’t have a human form, and God’s son Jesus, is not divine to the Jews. The Supreme deity in the Hindu faith is a trio of gods, and Hindus worship hundred more gods and goddesses. So which God are we talking about? And if we don’t even know who God is, how can it be proved that God exists?
PROVIDING PROOF
Believers say that there is plenty of evidence. For example some people think that the order and incredible complexity of the universe points to a single brilliant creator. Others say that there is historical evidence. For example, Muslims believe that the existence of their holy book, the Koran, which is the word of God, is proof that God exists. Many believe that the eye witness account of such events such as the giving of the Ten Commandments or the miracle of Jesus, as recorded in the Bible, prove that there is a God. Many of them have complete faith in God’s existence for them belief is more important than proof.
ATHEIST ARGUMENTS
There are plenty of arguments against the existence of God. Science has proven that matter cannot be created or destroyed, only converted. For many, that disproves the idea of a creator God. People wonder how there can be so much pain, suffering, and evil in the world if there is a God. They believe that God is all powerful and all loving, there would be no place for bad things to happen. Others feel there is so little evidence and so much contradiction between the different religions that an idea of an all-seeing, all-knowing, all-powerful God is beyond belief.
Personal Decision
Of course whether or not you believe in God is entirely a personal decision, and you are entitled to believe what you like as long as you extend the same right to everyone else.
