At first glance, he might seem to be the typical Indian young-adult, preparing for his IIT exams. But no, he isn’t. Meet Harsha Iyer, a chennai-based 19 year old self-confessed Beatles fan who quite school(at least mentally) at the age of 15 to pursue his passion of Music full-time. Typical Indian parents would even disown such children, but no, they are as special as this young lad.
“The support and encouragement from my parents was amazing. They have always been on the creative side and guided me to be the same way so they never stuffed the education system down my throat and didn’t care about all the social conventions etc. They know I just wouldn’t be any good with engineering and doctor,” he says proudly. Patti Smith , Nick Cave , The Beatles ,Radiohead , Tom Waits and all the great songwriters who’ve been around, he says, are his inspirations. And he learnt the guitar by himself with a little bit of help from his father who is also passionate about music.”Initially it was my dad who taught me the chords and how they work in relation with one another and he taught me how to use my ear to figure things out on the guitar since i couldn’t read notes and didn’t know theory. I still don’t know, by the way,” he says, with a laugh.
About why he quit school, Harsha says, “The year before I was in 12th standard, School felt like hell and I ended up learning nothing. I used to be a terrible student. After some time, I stopped caring about school and all I ever looked forward to was coming back home from school, writing songs and make more music. ”
His friends supported him in his endeavours too. “I owe them a lot. They’ve helped spread word about my album and thanks to them, my fan base is growing slowly.”
Unlike other contemporary musicians, his songs have a highly lyrical feel to them.
“Walking on the streets like they’re all so free , I’m sure they’re all pretending just like me.All of em searching everyday for their toys .The monotony of their lives leave them with no choice ” is an extract from his song ‘Toys’.
His debut album ‘Curious Toys’ which consists of 12 songs released online recently to good reception. Bangalore Mirror, the popular tabloid, featured a full page article on him and it did a lot of good to his popularity. “The market for musicians like me is good when compared to earlier but it can grow further. It’s still in the evolving process,” he says, speaking of the market.
